ABSTRACT

Reading is the path to success in school and life. Reading also can be defined as the most beneficial activity especially for students. One benefit that can be achieved by students is that reading can help them reaching good achievement. In the other hand readers have their own perception and interest toward their English reading material. The aim of this research was to find out the perception of English department student of FKIP ULM in batch 2017 toward the English reading material. The instrument used in the data collection was a questionnaire that consists of 17 questions in form opened and closed ended question and scale likert. The data were collected in a form of quantitative data and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and display in column diagram.

The result of the research, the researcher conclude that students perception toward reading English material has different kind of responses. This meant most of the students in this class really like to read English reading material and they have their own genre/type of books that student like to read. It will help students to increase their achievement in the class. In conclusion, based on the finding factor that influences student perception were personal factors, need, intelligence and past experience. Key words: reading, perception
