This research is aimed to describe the students’ abilities in writing a procedure text of 9th-grade students of SMPN 19 Banjarmasin. The population of this research was 192 ninth-grade students of SMPN 19 Banjarmasin. The samples of this research were 57 students from IX B and IX F selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a writing test. The students were asked to write a procedure text based on the information given. The raters used an analytical scoring system consisting of seven aspects covering originality, the correlation between title and content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and tidiness in writing. Then, the researcher made a conclusion of the result based on the following categories: excellent, good, fair, and poor.

The result of the research showed that the 9th-grade students’ abilities of SMPN 19 Banjarmasin in writing a procedure text was categorized as good. It can be seen from the average of the students’ writing text which was 81.87. There were 16 students (28%) who achieved excellent category (86-100), 29 students (50.9%) who achieved good category (76-85), and 11 students (19.3%) who achieved fair category (68-75), and there was only one student (1.7%) who achieved poor category (< 67). The highest ability score was in tidiness in writing aspect. Also, almost all of the subjects had good handwriting. Meanwhile, the lowest ability score was in the organization aspect. Some students were still confused about the generic structure of the procedure text.The researcher suggested the teachers drill more about how to write in a good organization of aprocedure text because the students’ abilitiesare considered low.
