Translation process occurs when a learner communicates in a foreign language. Translation becomes important as a tool to receive or deliver a message in a foreign language. Therefore, translation ability can not be separated into English as foreign language learning. The researcher wants to find out how the ability of the seventh-grade students in translating a descriptive text from Indonesian to English at SMPN 3 Banjarmasin in the academic year 2017/2018

This study used a descriptive quantitative approach. The population was 256 students, and the sample was 115 students taken by cluster random sampling. The instrument used in this research was translation ability test. The analysis focused on students’ translation ability and its kinds of translation.

The finding showed that the average score of all the sample in this research was 66.49 and categorized in good translation ability. Meanwhile, the most frequent to the least frequent translation found were: good translation (36.5%), poor translation (27.8%), very good translation (21.7%), excellent translation (8.7%), and bad translation (5.3%).

It can be concluded that the seventh-grade students of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin have good translation ability. The students are suggested to keep up their understanding of the language features differences between Indonesian and English  in order to support learning EFL and construct better translation. The teacher also can give students more information about how to produce an accurate translation and its usefulness.
