The objective of this research is to find out the ability in reading comprehension skill of the eight grade students of SMPN 17 Banjarmasin. The research design was Descriptive. The researcher used an objective test. This research proceed in two week. The eightht grade students of SMPN 17 were given the reading comprehension test so the researcher could find out their ability in reading comprehension based on their score of the reading comprehension test. The results of this research show that the ability of the students in reading comprehension is average. Based on the result, the researcher conclude that the teacher need to be more creative in teaching of reading comprehension to the students so the students’s ability might be improved
