This research investigated whether there is a significant difference on students’
achievement in reading comprehension taught with STAD and lecture method. The sample
was the eighth graders of Mts Assa’adah Bongkang. A quasi experimental design was
employed in this research. The VIII B was chosen as the experimental class while the control
ws VIII A. The experimental class was taught with STAD for three meetings and control
class with lecture method. Reading comprehension test was used as the instrument.
The result showed that both groups gained improvement on their achievements.
From the calculation result, the experimental group got the average score 58.26 in pre-test
and 84.00 in post-test. The control group got average score 50.07 in pre-test and 72.3 in posttest.
Based on the calculation using t-test, the calculated t value was higher than the t-table
(5.96266 > 2.00). Therefore, there was significant different achievement between the
experimental group and the control group.
Finally, the researcher suggests that the teachers use STAD as the strategy of
teaching to improve their students’ reading comprehension achievement
