This thesis is aimed to describe the first year students’ listening ability on
sound discrimination at the English Department of Lambung Mangkurat
University Academic year 2016/2017. This research uses descriptive method. The
population in this research is first year students of English Department of Lambung
Mangkurat University which took Listening I course in academic year of
2016/2017.The number of the population in this research is 85 students who are
divided onto 3 classes, A1, A2 and A3. Each class consists of twenty eight to
twenty nine students. The samples were taken by using random sampling. The
total samples are 28 students.
Based on the result, the students’ average score was 75. It means that the
first year student’s Listening ability was
very good category. To be specific, it can
be seen from the table above that there were 9 (32.14%) students who have
excellent score with score ranging from 80 to 100. Furthermore, there were 4
(14.29%) students in very good category with score ranging from 75 to 79. In
contrary with that, there were 8 (28.57%) students who have good category with
score ranging from 70 to 74. Then, there were 5 (17.86%) students in satisfactory
category with score ranging from 65 to 69. Next, there were 2 (7.14%) students
who have fair category with score ranging from 60 to 64.And there were none of
students in poor and fail category
Based on the research result, it is suggested to improve the ability in
listening; they can listen to English songs and English prose. These activities are
good to boost the students listening ability. Teacher should teach more exposure
listening skill especially descriptive text in listening
