Based on the consideration of the importance of the student’s ability in Simple
Present Tense for junior high school, this is aimed to know the student’s ability in using
Simple Present Tense at eight grade of SMPN 1 Kapuas Timur in academic year
2105/2016.
The research uses descriptive quantitative study. The population is 48 students and
the total of the participants of this study is 40 students (84%). Since the test uses the test,
researcher uses four types of objective and subjective test they are multiple-choice,
completion item, transformation and writing test.
The research finds that in general the student’s ability in Simple Present Tense is
still on knowledge level. Knowledge level is what the students remember about some
theories or information that is gained through education or experience (knowledge).
For multiple-choice item 27 students (67.5%) were able to pass the test which
showed that they were able to choose the right answers in multiple-choice test.
Meanwhile, 13 students (32.5%) were unable to pass the test. For completion item 28
students (70%) were able to pass the test which showed that they were able to answers in
completion item test. Meawhile, 12 students (30%) were unable to pass the test. In
conclusion, most of the students were able to pass the test. For transformation test 21
students (52.5%) were able to pass the test which showed that they were able to change
affirmative sentence into negative and introgative sentence. Meawhile, 11 students
(27.5%) were unable to pass the test. In conclusion, most of the students were able to pass
the test. And writing test 19 (47.5%) students were able to pass the application level test.
And 21 (52.5%) students were unable to pass the application level test. In other words, the
students were unable to apply their knowledge and comprehension in application level
test.
Based on the research results, it is suggested that in order to increase the student’s
ability in using Simple Present Tense, the teacher should give more practice to the
students. And the students need more practicing in Simple Present Tense in order to
improve their ability in using Simple Present Tense.
