            Reading is one of the English language skills that students need to master in order to be successful in learning. By learning reading, they are able to get new information. Yet, many students have difficulties in reading comprehension. Based on the researcher’s experience during teaching practices at SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin, the researcher found that the students have limited number of vocabulary so they felt difficult to comprehend the text. Therefore, the researcher tries to give an alternative technique to solve their reading problem which is through context clues technique.

The aim of this study was to find out whether or not there is a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension after being taught using context clues technique. The study included in quantitative research with quasi-experimental design. The researcher designed the lesson plan, conducted the treatment and measured the students’ score by pretest and posttest. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin 2018/2019 academic year. The researcher took two classes as the sample of the study. The sample was determined by using cluster random sampling.

The data were analyzed using ttest formula to test the hypothesis. It was found that the result of t-test is 4.20 for significant level of 5% and df 62. Then, the result of the t-table is 1.99. It showed that the t-test was higher than the t-table. The result of hypothesis testing determined that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It means that there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension after being taught by using context clues technique at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin.

Finally, it is suggested for the teacher to use context clues technique for teaching reading comprehension because the technique is useful to make students’ reading comprehension ability get betterABSTRACT
