Storytelling is one of the strategies that can be used to improve students' speaking skills. Through storytelling, students can elevate their English. Unfortunately, students faced some challenges in performing storytelling. Therefore, this study is conducted to describe the challenges that students faced in performing storytelling extracurricular activities at SMP Negeri 1 Kelumpang Hilir. In this study, the researcher analyzed the data by using a qualitative approach. The instruments used in collecting data were questionnaire to get the data from respondents about what they feel, observation to observe the process of students’ storytelling performance, and interview to ask directly about students’ challenges in performing storytelling. 

The results show that students have their own challenge in performing storytelling. The data from the questionnaire show that every student answering the statement by their experience in performing storytelling. From the observation, it was found that some students often feel nervous in front of the audience. And from the interview it was found that most of the students' challenges in performing storytelling were nervous, forgetting part of the story, and expressing difficulty. Based on the result above it is suggested that: (1) it is important for the students to be more confident in order to improve their performing in storytelling. Students need to be more practice to improve their speaking ability. (2) it is better for the instructor to build motivation for students in order to give the encouragement for students to learn English.
