The objective of this research is to describe the problems in teaching speaking at the eighth grade of SMPN 24 Banjarmasin. This research used descriptive method and qualitative research. The sample of this research is two English teachers who teaches at the eighth grade of SMPN 24 Banjarmasin. The techniques of data collection used are observation, interview and documentation. In teaching speaking, the teachers used discussion, role play, reading aloud and drilling methods. For the media, the teacher only used whiteboard. The teacher had difficulty to manage classroom situation with many students in the class and classroom instruction with the time in teaching speaking process and it is hard to make students’ group performance in front of the class. The students had limited vocabulary and pronunciation. Based on the findings of this research, it is suggested that in teaching speaking the teacher should give the classroom instruction clearly. The teacher should make an interesting media such as caption and flashcard with full color and used more methods in the class. The teacher should give new vocabulary with the meaning and pronouncing to the students before starting and closing the lesson. The school should limit the students in the class for effective learning process.
