Reading and Writing ability becomes one of the main focus in teaching English in which the students are expected to be capable of reading literature, periodicals, scientific, and technical journals that are mostly written in English. By mastering the writing ability, it is expected that the skill will equi[ the students in grasping the information as well as knowledge from the written text. Consequently, it will help them to broaden their insight and knowledge that finally will enable them to compete with others in their future.

This study used descriptive quantitative approach. The population was 285 students and the sample was 71 students of the second grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Gambut. In taking sample, the writer used cluster sampling from nine classes. In this study, the instrument used was writing test and reading test. To determine whether the difference between test reading and writing in their mean scores were significant at the same 5 percent level. SPSS version 24.0 has been used to compute descriptive statistic and perform pearson product moment correlation.

The finding showed that the mean of reading test was 60.2586 ≈ 60, and the standard deviation was 24.14180 ≈ 24. Therefore, the reading ability of the students was under of fair qualification. Besides, the mean of writing test was 29.50 ≈ 29, and the standard deviation was 16.887 ≈ 17. Therefore, the writing ability of descriptive text was also under of fair qualification. The Result of hypothesis was 0.244, which was smaller than 0.254, 0.330,then the null hypothesis is accepted.

It can be conclude that there is no significant correlation between students’ ability in reading and writing ability for descriptive text of the second grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Gambut. It is suggested to the teacher to consider giving more attention on the reading and writing skills. The students also need to have much practice to acquire the English skills.
