English has four skills, namelyn listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One of the reading skills has a crucial role in our live education and is a key part of language acquisition. The objective of this study was to discover the students’ problems in reading narrative text at the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Kandangan in academic year 2019/2020. The researcher used qualitative approach with the descriptive method. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students which consist of 59 students. The researcher used questionnaires, interview and reading comprehension test to collecting the data. The results of students’ responses in the questionnaire showed that almost all of the students had problems in reading narrative text. There were 31 students had problems in making inference, means the main problems students’ in reading narrative text was in making inference. The research results of English teacher and student interview also showed that the main problems students at the eighth grade were making inference. To triangulate the data results, the researcher also gave reading comprehension test to the student who was having problems in making inference, the questions about making inference had the lowest correct answer and the highest incorrect answer. Based on the outcome above, it is suggested that the students at the eighth grade should read a variety of book stories with different levels in order improve their vocabularies and practice more to answers reading comprehension task. It is suggested to the English teacher at SMPN 2 Kandangan to using cooperative learning strategy in teaching reading comprehension and it is also suggested to teach the students the technique to find the vocabulary meaning by using clues from the text without looking it up on the dictionary.
