Important aspects of using reading techniques are increasing students’ vocabulary and making sure that when they read new words, they understand them and how to put them into correct context. This research was aimed to describe the students’ reading techniques of the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Banjarbaru in reading comprehension of narrative text. This research used descriptive with qualitative and quantitative approaches as the method. 71 students are taken as the sample by using cluster random sampling method. In collecting data, the researcher used questionnaire and test.

            The research result shows in findings that students’ reading techniques in answering the test found they are in excellent category in using skimming and scanning. Moreover, summarizing reading technique is in good category. Meanwhile, the lowest reading technique that students’ mastery is making inference.

            Based on the findings, it is suggested that English Teachers put a big concern in developing students in being a good reader and giving guidance in practicing the techniques properly.
