Vocabulary is a crucial component in acquiring and understanding language. By having mastery vocabulary, the learners will find easier to know the meaning of the text. It can also help to avoid making mistake in understanding text. The aim of this research was to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery to their reading comprehension.
This research used correlative method. The variables of this research were students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ reading comprehension. The researcher used purposive sampling with the total sample 85 second grade students at SMPN 1 Gambut and the instrument used were vocabulary test and reading test. To analyze the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment in Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).
The result of this research showed that the coefficient correlation between the two variables was 0.627. It could be interpreted that there was a positive sufficient correlation between vocabulary mastery to their reading comprehension.
It is suggested that the students need to know more English words and the meaning of the words not only one meaning of each word but also appropriate to the context of the text in which the words are used.
