Learning has been defined as changes in behavior caused by experiences. Language learning strategies are defined as actions, behaviors, steps, or techniques that are often used by students to improve their abilities in developing L2 skills (Ghani, 2003). This research is also needed to study the strategy that the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Kotabaru use. Language learning strategies are thoughts carried out by conscious behavior that contain cognitive, metacognitive, affective and social strategies for students to improve their language skills (Chamot, 1987 and Oxford, 1990).
The research used a descriptive method and quantitative approach. The subject of this research was the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Kotabaru. Questionnaire and interview used as the instruments in this research. In this research, the research was held online. The subjects of this research were 36 students of eleventh grade at SMAN 1 Kotabaru. The results of the answers to the questionnaires from students at SMAN 1 showed that students used compensation strategy and social strategy.
The finding showed that there were several strategies that were more dominant used by students, namely compensation strategy and social strategy. It is hoped this study will help students’ learning process by using the strategy and the teacher could make this research as feedback to teach the student so they can do the learning process and get the knowledge easily.
