The main function of writing is as a means of indirect communication. Writing is considered the hardest skill for people who learn English because in the writing process, especially in recount text, there are some problems in making good writing.
This research used a qualitative approach to describe the student's problem in writing recount text of the Intermediate Writing class of FKIP ULM Banjarmasin year of 2020/2021. The participants were 34 students. The tools instruments used were questionnaires and interviews.
The result of the study showed that there are the highest-three and the lowest-three problems faced by the students. The highest-three common problems are grammar with the number is 30 or 21.0%, vocabulary with the number is 29 or 20.3%, and topic with the number is 28 or 19.6%. The lowest-three problems are capitalization with the number is 2 or 1.4%, conjunction with the number is 14 or 9.8%, and tenses and punctuation both occur to 20 students (14.0%). Grammar was the most difficult part for them. It is suggested that the students should be more active in the teaching-learning process; ask the teacher about the particular aspect in recount text that they do not understand, the teacher should give feedback towards the student’s writing and communicating their progress in writing. Writing is a skill that needs a process and practice. Therefore, the students should practice writing started from the simplest one such as writing a daily activity or writing their experience like recount text.
