Writing is one of the productive skills in English. It is taught at all educational levels from primary school to the university levels. Among several types of written works, writing an argumentative essay is one of the concerns. In this case, the researcher wants to find out the unity aspect in writing the argumentative essay.
This study tries to describe the unity aspect in writing the content of an argumentative essay by Advanced Writing Students of the English Department of Lambung Mangkurat University. The design of the research was quantitative. The subjects of the research are Advanced Writing course students of English Language Education Study Program batch 2016 of Lambung Mangkurat University. Sample of the data is 22 subjects from 78 population. The data were collected by cluster random sampling and asking the students to write argumentative. Afterward, the data were analyzed to find the unity aspect in writing an argumentative essay by using the rating scale and count it frequencies the repetition of words to find out the unity aspect.
The findings of the data the first inter-rater, students’ got the poor scale is 0 student, the fair scale is 4 students, good scale is 7 students, very good scale is 6 students, and excellent scale just 1 student. Also, the second inter-rater, students’ got the poor scale is 3 students, the fair scale is 8 students, the good scale is 6 students, the very good scale is 4 students, and the excellent scale just 0 students. Considering the result of this research, mostly half of the writing documents from the academic writing students in this class have a scale from good to poor in writing an argumentative essay. And almost half of the students can be more elaborate point-point in their essay. And the highest repetition of words it is Instagram (122), Price (20), and Coffee(82).
To be more significant, the lecturers who teach the Academic Writing students should give more practice to the students for part of writing, especially about unity aspect. So they do not forget about the unity aspect. This research may have some weaknesses, thus it is suggested to conduct research related to the content of the argumentative essay or the argumentation in general. The researchers are suggested to explore more about this topic with a different approach.
