ABSTRACT

This research is to analyze the pronunciation ability of the fifth year students in pronouncing the English fricative sound /f/ and /v/ and to investigate the factors that interfere thestudents’abilityinpronouncing English fricative /f/ and /v/ sounds. The methodology of this research was descriptivequantitave study.
The instruments are test and questionnaire. Test is used to analyze theability of the fifth year students in pronouncing English fricatives. Questionnaire is toused to find factors which may interfere the students’ anility in pronouncing Englishfricatives. The writer used audio recording of each subjects’ to get the data. Subjects’were asked to read some words and sentences of the test which consist of fricativesounds /f/ and /v/.
Based on data analysis, the subjects’ ability in pronouncing fricativesounds /f/ and /v/wasgood. The most difficulttype of /V/ soundsit can be obtainedby the lower percentage of ability (22%). The factors that interfere the students’ abilityinpronouncingfricativesounds/F/and/V/maybecausedbytheirlackofknowledgein pronunciation of fricative sounds. It is also possible that they know the theory well,butthey arenot ableto practiceit orally.
