The aim of this study was to findout whether how is the students’ ability in writing narrative text in the tenth grade. This study took place at SMA 1 Negeri 13Banjarmasin.

The method used in this study is a descriptive quantitative method with a non- experimental design. X IPS 1 that consists of 26 students and also X IPS 3 that consists of 28 students, also by considering that students who had learned narrative text based on the same curriculum and the student had taught by the same teacher.

The result of this research showed that the students’ average score was 82.21 it means that the tenth-graders of SMAN 1 Banjarmasin possess goodwriting mastery. For each writing aspect, originality and content fell into excellent category, while the organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics fell into good category. In accordance with previous studies, it was also discovered that students still face difficulties in utilizing correct grammar, particularly regarding the utilization of past verbs in narrative text. Moreover, this study also discovered that out of six writing aspects, grammar possess the lowest mastery percentage. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers should put more emphasis on grammatical aspects when teaching writing.

Based on the result of the study, the writer suggested that in teaching writing skill to students, teachers should create an interesting, enjoyable, creative, imaginary and fun class atmosphere in writing class. This result hopefully can inspire teachers in teaching writing, especially for the level of senior high school students.
