English for Science is one of the compulsory courses at Science Education Study Program FKIP ULM. A reference to the students’ background and the needs they have can provide an overview for the lecturer to be able to meet the ESP learning objective. To find out that information, needs analysis is needed to conduct. The objectives of this research were to investigate and describe the target needs and learning needs of science education students at FKIP ULM Banjarmasin.
The researcher used a descriptive quantitative approach to collect the data. The instruments of this research were questionnaire, interview, and document. The population of this research were Science Education students’ batch 2017 and 2018. By using a random sampling technique, the sample of this research were 60 students at Science Education Study Program FKIP ULM. The data in this research was presented with number and percentage.
The result showed that students’ purpose in learning English for Science was to communicate fluently both orally and written in total 81.7%. As for the needed skill, speaking was chosen by 28 students (46.7%). While the most preferred teaching method was study through games (60%) and there are eight preferred learning materials mostly chosen by students. Besides, the activities that were chosen by students showed that they want communicative and interactive activities in the classroom. Therefore, it is recommended to ESP lecturers to consider the aspects that are found in this research as references to develop an English for Science course.
