There are many languages ??spoken all over the world. Due to the importance of communication in human existence, translation has become a very efficient tool for communicating, sharing culture and information.Translation consist of the translating the meaning of the source into the source language Larson (1984:3).The difference of culture effects in delivering the messege. People need some ways to understand another language by translating the source language into the target language.

The method of translating is very important in translating English into Indonesian. This is important because for a student majoring in English in determining their ability to come when dealing with texts in English. Newmark(1988:2) translation is renderingthemeaningofatextintoanotherlanguageinthewaythat the authorintendedthe text. The purpose of this research is to describe the types of the methods used by the students in translating fairy tale text into Indonesian.

This research method uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Research instruments using tests, the sample for this study consists of 30 English majors. Data analysis using interactive analysis, with this analysis consists of three flows of activities that occur simultaneously namely; (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) conclusion/verification.

The result of this research showed that students used word by word translation, literal translation, and free translation in translating fairy tale text. Students should practice more in order to enhance their translating skills and knowledge of translation methods. To conduct research on the translation process used when translating texts or when researchers want to learn about the methods used by respondents.
