During the COVID-19 Pandemic, EFL teaching has been implementing online instruction. This phenomenon also attracts practitioners as well as many researchers interested in research on effective teaching in this situation. Many researchers have paid attention to the area of online teaching, which results from the students’ lack of pronunciation, the unfamiliar topics, the educator’s lack of giving explanation, and the limited internet access. However, only a few studies have focused on the problems that occur during EFL online teaching, especially in the area of speaking skills. Therefore, to fill the void in the research, this study aims to discoverthe problems faced by the English teacher in conducting online teaching speaking at tenth and eleventh grade of SMAN 8 BManjarmasin.

This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research consisted of only one English teacher at SMAN 8 Banjarmasin to be observed and interviewed. Furthermore, the respondent was interviewed with 20 questions. The interactive model is also used in analyzing the data of the interview. The interactive model of data analysis consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions.

The finding reveals that the teacher faced several problems in conducting online teaching speaking, such as the teacher’s teaching strategy only focuses on explaining the material, the teacher’s lack of unsuitable way in correcting students’ pronunciation, the teacher used the questions and answers technique repetitively because the teacher did not know the proper techniques in conducting online teaching speaking, the network connection problem, and the students’ lack of participation. Furthermore, e-learning platforms and media used is not a problem for the teacher. It is suggested for the teacher to develop engaging and interactive teaching strategy or techniques that will attract students' interest in learning during the pandemic period, to provide additional motivation and mental support, and for the students to participate actively in online teaching speaking.
