In the context of English subject classes, adjacency pairs often occur during a conversation between teachers and students, especially during a teaching and learning activity. this study explored the various types of adjacency pairs found in conversations between teachers and students in junior high to fill the gap of lacking relevant resources and to assist teachers and students in communicating more effectively through the context of adjacency pairs. The study was conducted at SMP Global Islamic Boarding School Barito Kuala employing conversation analysis. Along with CA, this study applied a qualitative research approach with a descriptive research method. The data were collected through video-recorded observations (documentation), observation notes, and interviews. After conversations from two observed classes were recorded using a video recorder, the data was transcribed and analysed using observation notes. Additionally, interviews were conducted with an English teacher and two representative students from each of the two observed classes. The interview results were utilized to support the observational findings. This study resulted there were eleven types of adjacency pairs out of the seventeen types and twenty-seven insertion sequence, showing the complexity of teacher-student conversation. This study also revealed four roles in the dynamic of conversations between the English teacher and the students of SMP GIBS Barito Kuala, which helps in creating a meaningful conversation. Based on the findings, teachers and students are suggested to familiarize themselves with the types and roles of adjacency pairs that occur in conversations to build more comprehensible communication.
