Translation is an act of transferring meaning of a language into another language. To conduct this, a person must have sufficient knowledge of the source language and the target language. Jane Eyre is an interesting novel to be researched in many aspects. It is noticed that there is significant increase in reading translated novels among Indonesian youngsters. The objective of this research is to identify and analyze the translation techniques used by Lulu Wijaya in translating Jane Eyre into Indonesian language.
This research was a descriptive qualitative that used Moline and Albir’s translation technique category as the theoretical basis. The researcher was the instrument itself and the data sheets that contained the tables as the medium for collecting and grouping the data. The process included comparing and analyzing the sentences in the source language (English) and the target language (Indonesian language) in the first 12 chapters.
The findings showed that the translator applied 13 of 18 techniques in the chapters in question, that are Literal translation in 8 times, Adaptation in 11 times, Modulation in 12 times, Established equivalent in 12 times, Borrowing in 11 times, Transposition in 8 times, Reduction in 11 times, Amplification in 12 times, Generalization in 4 times, Variation in 1 time, Linguistic amplification in 2 times, Compensation in 3 times, and Description in 1 time. The process of using this translation technique in book translation takes place by emphasizing the meaning and methods of the source and target language. Research has shown that Molina and Albir's transformation technique can be used for any type of transformation, as evidently in the translation of “Jane Eyre” novel in Indonesian. The researcher hopes that future research can use another novel or conduct further research about this novel with a different topic.
