Peatlands contain high concentrations of nitrogen (N) in organic forms. However, the high N content of peat soils does not necessarily make it directly available for plant uptake. Most of the N in peat soils is present as organic compounds that cannot be readily utilized by plants. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the use of manure and green manure in improving N availability in peat soils. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one factor and orthogonal contrasts, consisting of five treatments: control, cow manure, goat manure, green manure of Azolla and Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), with a dosage of 115 kg N/ha per treatment and four replications for each treatment. The results showed that both manure and green manure significantly affected soil pH, available nitrogen (N-NO?-, N-NH??), organic carbon, (C-organic) and C/N ratio of peat soils. There was a significant difference between manure and green manure application. Manure application increased soil pH, N-NO?- and N-NH??, while decreasing the C/N ratio of peat soils. Cow and goat manure resulted in the highest soil pH, while goat manure produced the highest available nitrogen (N-NO?-, N-NH??). Goat manure also accelerated decomposition, as indicated by a significant reduction in the C/N ratio of peat soils.
