Reading is an interactive process between a reader and a text which leads to get a reading comprehension. Students have difficulty on the basis of reading comprehension, that is understanding the context of the text and finding the main idea. The difficulty in finding the main idea is a significant problem in junior high school when students may not be interest when they are only instructed to read the text and answer comprehension questions without engaging in pre-reading or while-reading activities. This research is to measure whether or not there is a different reading comprehension achievement between the students who are using SQP2RS strategy and the students who are not using SQP2RS strategy on the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin. The gap of this research is the lack of specific research on the effect of SQP2RS in reading narrative text for eighth-grade students.
This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. For the samples, there were 75 students of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin divided into experimental and control groups through cluster random sampling. The data collection was analyzed by the results of pre-test and post-test using reading comprehension achievement test for the instrument. The collected data were calculated used Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS 26.
The results showed that there is a different effect between the two groups, it can be seen by the score of experimental group was higher than the control group. It is proven by the significance value was 0.000, which means that it is lower than 0.05 (significance level). In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. In other words, there is a different reading comprehension achievement on students who are taught reading comprehension using SQP2RS and those who are not at the eighth-grade of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin. Therefore, SQP2RS strategy is suggested for the teacher to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement in reading narrative text.
