Land cover change in urban fringe areas continues to increase, including in Alalak Subdistrict, which serves as a buffer zone for the growth of Banjarmasin City. This study aims to identify land cover changes between 2018 and 2024 and to analyze the socio-economic factors influencing these changes. The method used involves classification of Sentinel-2A imagery using the Maximum Likelihood algorithm, with change analysis conducted through the Combine overlay technique. The classification results show high accuracy, with Overall Accuracy reaching 94.87% (2018) and 97.43% (2024), and Kappa Accuracy at 93.34% (2018) and 96.66% (2024) respectively. The findings reveal a significant increase in built-up land by 407.96 hectares, with the most substantial change occurring in Semangat Dalam Village (151.67 ha). The conversion mainly occurred from rice fields, mixed crops, shrubs, and swamp forest. Based on interviews, the most dominant social factor was population growth (99.2%), while the primary economic factor was land price fluctuation (98.1%), which encouraged residents to sell their land and seek new employment. These findings highlight the importance of spatial planning control in managing the rate of land cover change in peri-urban areas.
