Literary works often portray the cultural values of the societies they represent, offering readers insights into different ways of life. However, many students in English education programs remain unaware of how these values function within literature or how they contribute to cross-cultural understanding. Therefore, this study examines the cultural values depicted in Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops, focusing on how family values, educational values, and work values are reflected in the novel.

This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The novel serves as the primary data source, analyzed through close reading and thematic classification based on three main value categories. Supporting theories from cultural and literary studies were consulted to strengthen the interpretation. The study also aimed to relate the cultural values found in the novel to concepts commonly discussed in the Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) course.

The findings showed that the novel presents strong family values represented through responsibility and interdependence, educational values shown through dedication to learning and solidarity, and work values expressed through perseverance and integrity. These values align with Indonesian cultural norms and provide meaningful insights for CCU learning. The study based on the literature is recommended as a useful medium for enhancing students’ cultural awareness.
