English and Indonesian language are rich in vocabularies including its figurative expressions. One of the figurative expressions is idiom. In translating idiom, the students often find some difficulties. Therefore, to produce an ideal translation, the students’ translation skill of using appropriate strategies is needed to transfer suitable and meaningful messages.
This research is focused on idiom translation which aims to describe the strategies used in translating English idioms into Indonesian by English Department students’ batch 2015 of Lambung Mangkurat University. This research used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were gathered using translation test and questionnaire from 41 students.
The result showed thatthere were five strategies found in the students’ translation. They were: first, translation by paraphrasing (very often); second, literal translation (often); third, translation by using idiom of similar meaning and form (sometimes); fourth, translation by using idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (rarely), and the last, translation by omission (very rarely). In addition, most of the data showed that the students utilized the translation strategies appropriately. However, few of the data showed that the students were failed in utilizing translation by paraphrasing and literal translation strategy appropriately.
Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the students indeed used strategies in their translation. The result of this study is useful for raising the students’ familiarity towards idioms and translation strategies. The lecturers should teach more about idioms whether directly or insert the idioms into learning materials. In addition, the other researchers are expected to conduct a more detail research in the future.
