As one of the four language skills, reading is requires people not only to recognize words and reading form, but also learn to comprehend a message or the content of what they read. This research aims to find out whether there is any significant difference on students’ reading achievement taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and those who are taught by using Group Investigation (GI).
The research used a quasi experimental design. The test was used as the instrument in collecting data. The eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Banjarmasin academic year 2018/2019 were the population of this research. The samples were 58 students from two classes who were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The experimental group was class VIII D. They were taught by using NHT. The control group was class VIII Fstudents who were taught by using GI. The treatment was conducted three times each class.
The result of this research showed that there isa significant difference on students’ reading achievement taught by using Numbered Heads Togetherand those who are taught by using Group Investigation. The experimental class which was taught by using numbered heads together achieve better in reading recount text that the control class. Based on the calculation, the experimental class got the average score 66,82 in pre-test and got 88,55 in post-test. The control class got 63,24 in pre-test and 69,51 in post-test. Furthermore, the use of Numbered Heads Together was more successful in teaching reading recount texts at the eighth grade students of SMPN 13 Banjarmasin.
Based on the research result, the researcher suggests to the English teacher to use numbered heads together as the alternative technique in teaching. Numbered heads together can improve students’ achievement particularly in reading.
