Grammar is the core of teaching and learning of languages. It means that the knowledge of English grammar will give effects to all parts of teaching and learning process such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Gerund is one thing which have to be learned in grammar to make good sentences. Since the researcher had already taken preliminary test about gerund, most of students still do not know when they should use Gerund and when they should use infinitive. This study aims to analyze the type and dominant error made by batch 2016 students of English Department at ULM in identifying gerund.

            The descriptive-quantitative research study was set to find out and describe the research question of the study. Then, the total sampling was used in order to get the participants of the study. Therefore, 83 students from batch 2016 of English Department University of Lambung Mangkurat had been chosen to be the subjects. Also, the written test is used to find out the data attempted. In order to analyze the data, the researcher uses three steps: identifying, classifying, and describing based on the comparison between the students’ first language and the target language from the three time oral tests.

            The research findings show significant errors production that was occurred from the written test. The researcher found that most common or greatest number of type errors made by the subjects is misformation with frequency of error 95.53% or 1198 errors.The second is omission with frequency of error 3.11% or 39 errors. The last is addition with frequency of error 1.36% or 17 errors. By learning more about Gerund, the students can be aware in using Gerund both written and spoken. This study showed how far the students understood Gerund and hopefully it can help lecturers to get clear picture of students’ knowledge in identifying Gerund.
