Among four skills that students have to be mastered, writing is considered as a difficult skill and threatening for many students. They approach it reluctantly and even are in fear. In writing, students must have ability to share and to write their ideas in a written form. Writing is different from learning other skills because writing is a thinking process and needs much time. The researcher is interested in students difficulties in writing personal recount text in the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin in Academic year of 2018/2019. The objective of study is to describe the difficulties faced by the students of tenth grade of SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin in writing personal recount text.
The researcher used descriptive qualitative research as the type of research. The population of the research was 234 students and the 33 samples were taken. The sampling is cluster random sampling. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview.
Based on the questionnaire, the students have some difficulties in writing personal recount text. first, the students had problem in content. Second, the students had problem in organization. Third, the students had problem in vocabulary. Fourth, the students had problem in language. The last, the students had problem in mechanics.
Finally, it is suggested that for English teacher to improve writing skills and improve students vocabulary about recount text. The students should write English text not only in school but also write in outside school. Teacher and students action are needed more than just theory.
