Reading comprehension is a way to understanding or comprehending of the text and to get information from the text. The aim of this research is to describe the strategies and media that teacher used in teaching reading comprehension at the eighth grade students at SMPN 26 Banjarmasin.
In this research, the researcher used qualitative research and descriptive method. The subject of this research is an English teacher who teaches at Eighth grade. The instruments used in this research were observation sheet and interview. The observation sheet was used to see the implementation of strategy and media in teaching reading comprehension in Eighth grade. The interview was used to get specific information in teaching reading comprehension.
The finding in this research conducted with an English teacher about teacher’ strategies was there were three strategies thatthe teacher most frequently used in teaching reading comprehension, SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review), scaffolding, and QARs. Based on observation and interview, the teacher used the picture related people and thing as her media to teaching reading comprehension and also used realia as a media for make the students more easily to imagine and understand the material. The learning strategy through the used of the SQ3R strategy was continued with the scaffolding strategy and the interaction of learning with the QARs strategy at the end of the learning process turned out to really require image media. The role of image media can be utilized sustainably in SQ3R, Scaffolding and QARs, this finding proves that the combination of the three methods with image media is intertwined continuously.
