This research aimed to find out the students’ ability in using coordinating conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs and semicolon in compound sentences. The connectors can help to explain the relationship ideas in paragraphs or essays. Moreover, connectors are a tool to create cohesive relations which are used abundantly by students in their writing paragraphs and academic essays.
This research used quantitative method and described the result in descriptive form. The population of this research was 103 students of the English Department Batch 2017, and 65 students were taken as samples using cluster random sampling, they are from Intermediate Writing Course. The written test and interview were used as instruments.
The result of the research showed that students’ ability in using coordinating conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs and semicolon in compound sentences were categorized as average with 61.6. The test using coordinating conjunctions were categorized as low with the average score 58%. Meanwhile, using semicolon was classified as fair level with the average score 63%. However, using conjunctive adverbs were categorized as very low level with 44%, which is the lowest category among the other two. The teachers are suggested to provide the students sufficient explanations of respective conjunctions and their function in compound sentences and game can be used as method to improve in teaching writing.
