RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AGE, GENDER AND DURATION OF DIABETES
PATIENTS WITH THE INCIDENCE OF DIABETIC PERIPHERAL
NEUROPATHY AT RSUD ULIN BANJARMASIN

Background: Diabetes mellitus increase constantly if it is not treated properly
and will lead to complications. The most frequent complication is neuropathy
which causes tingling, pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs and arms that
may be influenced by age, sex and duration of diabetes.
Objective:This research aimed to relationship of age, sex, and duration of
diabetic with the incidence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy at Ulin Banjarmasin
Hospital.
Method: Correlational research used a cross sectional approach, sample was
derived from 83 people using convenience sampling technique. The instrument
used is a the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) questionnaire.
Data were analyzed using chi-square.
Results: This study found that there was a relationship between age and the
incidence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy at Ulin Banjarmasin Hospital (p value
0.001, α = 0.05). Furthermore, there was a relationship between gender and the
incidence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy in RSUD Ulin Banjarmasin (p value
0.043, α = 0.05) and there was a relationship between the duration of diabetes
with the incidence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy at RSUD Ulin Banjarmasin (p
value 0.001 α = 0.05).
Discussion: Diabetes is influenced by age, sex and duration of diabetes which
leading to complications such as neuropathy. It is recommended that diabetic
patients make early detection to prevent the occurrence of neuropathic
complications so that the quality of life for diabetic patients will be increase.
