This study aimed to find out the factors that inhibit in student’s speaking made by twelfth grade of SMAN 2 Banjarmasin. This research used a qualitative approach. The design of this research was descriptive. This research was conducted at SMAN 2 Banjarmasin. The researcher decided to investigate class of XII Bahasa. There were 34 students in the class, but further analyzed a little more to find case studies that occurred, as many as 4 students were found to have case studies. In this research, the instruments used to collect the data were observation, questionnaire, and the main instrument is interview. The collected data were analyzed by reducing the data, presenting the data, taking the conclusion or verification. The researcher used data triangulation to show the trustworthiness of the data.

Based on the data analysis shows that there were a number of problems to speak English by students caused by some inhibiting factors such as cognitive factors and affective factors. From the data result, it showed that mostly problems caused by anxiety, shyness, nervous, and lack of confidence, lack of grammar, lack of vocabulary, and poor or unclear pronunciation. In addition, many students (88,2%) mentioned that lack of understanding of grammartical of the words become the main problem that inhibited students in speaking English. This study finds several causes of factors that hinder speaking English and this study suggested some strategies to overcome these difficulties such as more practice, increase the vocabulary mastery, join the extra class of English and lowering students’ anxiety in speaking English.
