Vocabulary is a substantial component of language acquisition and communication. Nonetheless, a great number of seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Banjarmasin possessed low levels of English vocabulary. This problem would affect their development of English skills and hinder them from achieving learning goals in the classroom. At the same time, gamification has been widely acknowledged as a successful strategy for improving students’ learning achievement. Hence, this study tries to find an effective way to improve students’ vocabulary through digital game applications by investigating whether or not there is an effect on the students who are taught vocabulary using Wordwall application and those who are not at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Banjarmasin.

This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design on the sixty students who were divided into experimental and control groups through purposive sampling. The primary instrument for data collection was a vocabulary achievement test, which comprised a pre-test and a post-test. The collected data were subjected to the Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS 27.

The results reveal that there is a different effect between two groups, with the experimental group students achieving higher post-test scores compared to those in the control group. It is then proven by a significance value of 0.001, below the significance level (0.05), indicating that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that Wordwall application has positive impacts on the students, particularly in their scores and attitudes. Therefore, it is suggested for the teacher to use and explore Wordwall application to augment students’ participation and excitement in learning.
