Schoolsand families have an important role in the process of developing children's independence. Independence is a condition in which a person has a competitive desire to advance for his own good, is able to make decisions and initiatives to overcome problems at hand, and carry out his duties and is responsible for what he does.

In self-reliance inclusive education for mentally retarded children, more specifically, self-development or self-care so that later mild mentally retarded children are able to carry themselves in a wider environment after their education. This article aims to describe how independence is possessed by mentally retarded children in SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin. With a research sample of 5 people. The purpose of this research is to describe the self-reliance of mild mentally retarded children at the school.

This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive study type of research. The technique used in this study is a qualitative data analysis technique, namely data reduction, data display (presentation of data), conclusions and verification. Data collection instruments used were interviews and documentation. Interviews were conducted with 5 respondents, namely 1 counseling teacher and 4 parents of students.

The results of this study indicate that children with mild mental retardation have a moderate level of independence but leads to low because in some conditions they are sometimes able to make decisions on their own, but sometimes they also often depend on the people closest to them in acting, they are used to getting encouragement first when they have to do something.
