Sari, Kharisma, Aura. 2024. The Correlation between Students Past Tenses Mastery and Students’ Ability in Writing Recount Text. Sarjana’s Thesis. English Language Education Study Program. Faculty of Teachers’ Training and Education, Lambung Mangkurat University, Banjarmasin. The first advisor: Dr. Novita Triana, S.Pd., M.A., the scond advisor: Eka Puteri Elyani S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: Correlation, Past Tense, Recount Text
Past tenses mastery plays an important role on writing recount text. There has been a lot of research conducted of past tenses mastery and the students’ ability of writing recount text. Most previous research was carried out in high schools and rarely at universities. Therefore, this study was conducted to fill the gap from those previous studies. This study also aimed to find the connection between past tenses mastery and the language use of recount text. This research employed a quantitative approach with correlation analysis in processing the data. The researcher used mastery of the past tenses as the independent variables and the ability in writing recount text as the dependent variable. The data was collected from grammar and writing test. It was conducted to 23 ELESP students of Lambung Mangkurat University batch 2021 using random sampling technique. All of the data in this study was analyzed by using the help of Microsoft Excel and the SPSS program. The finding of the study indicated that there was a significant positive moderate relationship between mastery of the past tenses and the ability in writing recount text. In addition, mastery of the past tenses and the language use of recount text also showed moderate positive correlation. These can be interpreted that the students’ knowledge on the past tenses and their use in recount text writing go in the same direction; students’ stronger past tense skills are associated with better recount writing, but the effect isn't overwhelmingly strong. Hence, the students could should learn more about grammar and they need to improve their ability in writing especially in writing recount text. For other researchers, this study can be a reference to conduct further research on similar field.
