Reading is the process of understanding or comprehending a text to obtain relevant information. To understand the meaning of the text, students must understand the meaning of the vocabulary found in the text.Many studies have been conducted before on the correlation between and students’ size and depth of vocabulary and reading comprehension. However, little research has been investigated in exploring the correlation between the size as well as the depth of vocabulary and reading comprehension. Therefore, this research aims at examining the correlation between students’ size and depth of vocabulary and reading comprehension across these different text genres. This research employed quantitative approach with correlation analysis in processing the data. The independent variables were vocabulary size and depth of vocabulary, while reading comprehension served as the dependent variable. The data was gathered using the Vocabulary Level Test, Word Associates Test and Reading Comprehension Test. The population of this research was tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin in the academic year of 2022/2023 and the samples were 35 students that selected using cluster random sampling technique. All of the analysis in this study was analyzed by using the help of Microsoft Excel and the SPSS program. The findings of this research indicated a significant positive low correlation between vocabulary size and reading comprehension, a significant positive moderate correlation was found between the depth of vocabulary and reading comprehension. The result of this research can be interpreted that vocabulary size and depth are important for reading comprehension, this study highlights the need to consider other influencing factors and ensure the suitability of assessment instruments to obtain accurate measurements of students' abilities. It is suggested that students need to learn more about vocabulary with several strategies and for the further researchers to ensure the instruments are suitable with students’ proficiency level.
