The use of rewards and punishments has been proved to be an effective use by teacher to increase students’ motivation in English learning. Rewards and punishments are carried out so the students can have the desire and the motivation to learn and can avoid the same bad actions or mistakes. Many studies have shown the positive impact of reward and punishment in the English language learning context. However, the researcher still believed that the study of rewards and punishments needs to be conducted more due to various contexts and forms of research and varieties of rewards and punishments. Therefore, to fill that gap from previous studies the researcher conducted this study in a different context, more various content of rewards and punishments. This research also aims to find the implementation of rewards and punishments in the English classroom.This research employed a qualitative approach. This research descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected from three instruments, which are observation sheets, interviews, and documentation. The subject of the research was junior high school students in eighth grade of SMPN 14 Banjarmasin.The results of the research show that there are three rewards and three punishments that teacher applied in this study. It was found that the kinds of rewards that were applied were praise, prizes, and sign of appreciation. It was given by the teacher when students could answer questions from teacher. On the other hand, the forms of punishment that are found in this study are additional assignments, absences, and zero scores.
