Figurative language is when words or expressions that are used do not carry the same meaning as their literal interpretation. Figurative language is a way of using words to create colorful and imaginative expressions that go beyond their literal meaning. The researcher chose ELESP 2021 because the researcher wanted to find out their difficulties in understanding or using figurative language. This research investigates the English Language Education Students’ Difficulties in Using English Figurative Language in Creative Writing Course.

The researcher used a qualitative approach with descriptive design to investigates English Language Education Students’ Difficulties in Using English Figurative Language in Creative Writing Course. The researcher used two instruments, a questionnaire to know students’ difficulties and factors that are causing students to use figurative language, and an interview to learn more deeply about the topic. The participant of this research were 24 students recruited based on several criteria determined by the researcher regarding to the topic of this research.

The result shows students' difficulties in utilizing English figurative language within creative writing courses has illuminated several significant challenges that warrant thorough examination and intervention. Foremost among these issues is the prevalent lack of foundational knowledge in figurative language among students. Many participants demonstrated only a basic understanding, struggling to grasp the nuanced complexities and applications of figurative expressions essential for effective creative writing. This deficiency not only impedes their ability to engage meaningfully with figurative language but also underscores the necessity for improved memory strategies and a deeper comprehension of figurative language constructions. Therefore, it suggests for students and readers within the English Language Education study program, it underscores the importance of attentiveness during lectures that delve into figurative language. It also suggested that lecturers provide comprehensive explanations regarding various types of figurative language, particularly during grammar exercises.
