Speech act does not only produce utterances containing grammatical structures words to words but also there is an action via utterances. Speech act is an utterance that serves a function of communication and includes real-life interaction such as at school, between teacher and students. To delivering the material, teacher makes an utterance to interact with the students. Illocutionary acts, as seen from their form and utterance and their function and process in learning. The illocutionary acts do not just convey the true meaning of a speech but also have other purposes for conveying it.
This research aims to find out the types of illocutionary act and analyze function of each illocutionary act used by English teacher in teaching-learning school process at SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Empat. This research was conducted at Simpang Empat, Kabupaten Tanah Bumbu. This research is used descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the English Teacher and the object is the utterances. The researcher as a non-participant and used documentation, voice recorder and note taking to find out the types and function of illocutionary acts performed by the English teacher.
The findings showed that there are four types of illocutionary acts used by English teacher in teaching-learning English they were assertive, directive, commissive, expressive. The function of each illocutionary acts are found in the utterances based on their types, Assertive: informing, stating, suggesting, concluding, complaining, reporting. Directive: requesting, commanding, giving order, advising, warning, prohibiting. Commisive: offering, promising. Expressive: thanking, complimenting, apologizing, blaming. Declarative was not found in this research.
