Flashcards are visual aids that deliver knowledge straightforwardly and appealingly, making them ideal for teaching. Several studies were conducted, and their findings were that flashcards are an effective tool for assisting students with their descriptive writing. The study investigates whether flashcards significantly improve students' descriptive writing after instruction. The goal is to determine whether a substantial difference exists between utilizing flashcards and picture series when teaching eleventh-grade students in Fashion Design Major to write descriptive writings at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin.
The Fashion Design major's eleventh-grade students participated in the research conducted at SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin. XI Fashion Design 1 was the experimental class, utilizing flashcards, while XI Fashion Design 2 was the control class, utilizing picture series. This study used purposive sampling and a quasi-experimental design, with a writing examination as the research instrument. The dataset consisted of a pre-test and post-test. Using SPSS Version 26, the Mann-Whitney U test was conducted on the collected data.
The results indicate a significant difference between eleventh-grade students in SMKN 4 Banjarmasin who are instructed to use Flashcards and those instructed to use Picture Series in writing descriptive text. The null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted, as evidenced by a significance value of 0.000, less than the standard significance level of 0.05. Flashcards have a beneficial effect on students, as can be assumed. Consequently, it is recommended that the educator employ and investigate Flashcards to increase students' engagement and enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge. Future researchers must thoroughly prepare to identify what may have been missed in this study.
