        Politeness is an essential thing in our daily life, especially while having interaction between each other. We must pay attention to the situation or to whom we are talking to. Thus, politeness is the needs to create a good relationship with each other in social interactions. Furthermore, politeness not only can be found in our interactions in daily life but also can be found in literary works, such as: movie, drama series, novels, or even in poems. Therefore, this research aimed to find out what types of politeness that used of the characters in Mona Lisa Smile movie based on the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987) and Geoffrey Leech (1983) theory.

            This research used a descriptive qualitative method, it concerned with the data that description in the form words based on of utterances that produced by the characters in which politeness strategies and politeness principles occurs. The data were collected through observing the movie. After that, the data transcribed in the form of words, and the researchers sort the data that identifies as politeness strategies and politeness principles. Researchers used scripts document of the movie as the source in this research and using observations sheet with coding system to analyse and classify the data.

             The results of this research were: first, characters applied four types of politeness strategies in the characters’ utterances with 164 data in total, namely: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record and positive politeness is the most dominant type. Second, the characters applied six types of politeness principles with 56 data in total, namely: tact maxim, generous maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim and the most dominant principles is tact maxim. It is suggested for the future researchers who want to conduct similar study to explore politeness strategies and principles using different kinds of theory or towards other objects of study.
