Vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension are fundamental skills in education especially for reading skills. These two abilities are important because both abilities are needed to understand and interpret the information contained in a text. The purposes of the study is to discover the relationship between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension abilty at eighth grade students of SMPN 04 Banjarmasin

This research used quantitative approach with correlational study as the method. The variables of this research were students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ reading comprehension ability. The researcher used purposive sampling with total sample 62 second grade students at SMPN 04 Banjarmasin. The instruments were used vocabulary test and reading comprehension test and to analyze the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment Coefficien Formula and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) V.22.

The result of this study shows that the correlation coefficient is 0, 753 with the type of correlation is positive sign. In testing the hypothesis, the researcher uses the table of critical value of the Pearson Product Moment. The value of n is 62, Degrees of freedom (df) is 60 (n-2). The level of significance (α =0, 05) the value shown n the rtable  is  0,254. It means that the value of correlation of X and Y (rXY) is higher than the value of rtable. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It could be interpreted that there was a positive correlation  between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. 

It is suggested that students need to learn more English terms and their meanings, not just in one meaning but also in with regard to the context of the text in which the words are used. For further researchers also suggested to conduct other research by using more various instruments and cover large populations for obtaining more detailed and depth result.
