Writing skill is one of the four integrated skills in mastering English other than listening, speaking, and reading. There are several difficulties faced by students in writing, such as not having sufficient vocabulary or good grammar. According to the observation result by the researcher at SMK ISFI Banjarmasin, there are students who still struggle with their writing ability. This research focused on the question whether there is any effect of Instagram use on vocational high school student’s descriptive writing ability at tenth grade of SMK ISFI Banjarmasin.

This research used quasi-experimental design and quantitative approach. The sample of this research were 67 tenth grade students of SMK ISFI Banjarmasin based on cluster random sample. 34 students of X-A pharmacy as the experimental group and 33 students of X-B pharmacy as the control group. The analysis of the data was done by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test on SPSS version 25.

The result of this research showed that there is a difference achievement between the student who are taught descriptive writing by using Instagram and students who were not. The students made progress in vocabulary, ideas and grammar. This is proved by the sigh (2-tailed) value which is lower than 0,05 and the t-test which is higher than the t-table. The t-test value is 8.814 while the t-table is 2.002 for df= 58 at the significant level = 0,05. Therefore, it is suggested to teachers and students to use Instagram as an additional consideration in writing exercises, especially in writing descriptive text.
