One well-known approach to improving reading skills is through extensive reading. In extensive reading, thoughtful reading choices combined with effective reading strategies make students comprehend information more efficiently and develop a genuine appreciation for reading. Many previous studies have discussed the topic of reading strategy and reading choices. However, no studies have been found that specifically talk about how students determine their reading choices and the reading strategy they use for extensive reading. Therefore, this study explored ELESP students’ reading choices and strategies in the extensive reading activity.

This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design. The researcher used the interview to obtain the data from the ten participants recruited using a purposive sample technique. The participants are students in batch 22 from the English Language Education Study Program of Lambung Mangkurat University who met the required criteria. The interview data were analyzed usingdata reduction, display, and conclusion drawing or verification.

The study's findings revealed that the participants determined their reading choices through some steps, including identifying their reading purposes, choosing based on their interests, taking recommendations and reviews from others, selecting the reading format and access to the reading material, and paying attention to the content of the material itself. Reading strategies employed in extensive reading activities were previewing for the pre-reading, context clues, character tracking, foreshadowing awareness, visualization, re-reading, and discussion for during-reading, then reflecting and reviewing for the post-reading.Finally, it is suggested to consider the reading choices and reading strategies that students employ in extensive reading for meaningful learning.
