Descriptive text was an important part of the English curriculum in junior high school, especially for seventh-grade students. However, many students at SMPN 3 Banjarmasin faced difficulties in understanding descriptive text, which hindered their reading comprehension and limited their academic achievement. Traditional teaching methods were often ineffective in engaging students. In contrast, gamification had been recognized as an innovative strategy to increase student motivation and improve learning outcomes. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate whether the use of the Blooket Platform had an effect on students’ achievement in learning descriptive text compared to those who were taught using Quizizz at the 7th grade of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin.
This study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design involving 76 students, divided into experimental and control classes using cluster random sampling. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test on descriptive text, administered in the form of a pre-test and post-test. The collected data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test with SPSS 26 to examine the differences between two classes.
The result showed that there was a significant difference between the post-test scores of students taught using Blooket and those taught using Quizizz. The experimental class achieved higher scores, with a significance value 0.000, which was lower than the 0.05 threshold. This indicated that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It could be concluded that the Blooket platform significantly affected students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text. Thus, it was recommended for English teachers to consider incorporating Blooket into their teaching strategies to enhance students’ engagement and comprehension.
