Listening and speaking are important language skills for effective professional communication, especially for students preparing to enter the workforce or another aspect. Many ELESP students still face considerable difficulties in developing these skills within academic and professional contexts. This research aims to explore the challenges experienced by English Education Study Program Students in the "Listening and Speaking for Professional Purposes" course at Lambung Mangkurat University. The study seeks to identify specific obstacles that hinder students’ listening comprehension and speaking fluency.
The method of this research is qualitative descriptive study. The instruments of this research are questionnaires and interview, and the subject are 10 students from the ELESP 2023 batch in which five of them were further interviewed using semi-structured interviews to gain deeper insights about the challenges in the course of Listening and Speaking for Professional Purposes.
The findings show that students experience a range of challenges in both listening and speaking activities. Common listening problems include fast speech, unfamiliar accents, and limited vocabulary, while speaking challenges revolve around anxiety, fear of making mistakes, and lack of practice.Furthermore, the result of this study revealed that challenges stem from both cognitive and affective factors, such as language proficiency and self-confidence. The study suggests that lecturers should incorporate authentic materials, provide more interactive speaking opportunities, and foster a supportive classroom environment. These strategies may help students gradually improve their English communication skills for academic and professional success.
